This got shoved in both Wired and some parenting magazine my wife gets (Cookie?) and they arrived on the same day. Thanks for writing up this summary, because I flipped through this several times but could find no content, only a huge slew of ads. Oh, but I did see where all the Hot Clubs in LA are and Who Will Be There, complete with Pfork name-dropping. Hey, this mag's got some cred! whoa!

Jim Windolf gets my vote as staff writer of the year for selling an editor on an article (dark side of moon vs Oz) that's been written 172 times in the past 30 years, 50 in bad zines, 72 of them in college newspapers.

And yeah, it sucked to get this thing with the New Yorker, but then in the New Yorker's 11/26 issue, in their review "The Metal Box" CD box set, they drop a fact unchecked: "There's academic literature, of a sort-the guitarist Ronnie James Dio contributes an interview on the origins of the "horned hand" salute ..."

Got mine in the New Yorker too and didn't really understand the connection until now. Sucks that this is really taking the place of a VF music issue. I always loved those Rock Snob Dictionary Pieces, priding myself on how many of the entries I knew. And all the pictures! I remember cutting out pics of Gillian Welch, Brian Eno, and the like and putting them up on my wall. Didn't find any of the shots in this Music Rocks as inspiring.

Not only did it seem as if this POS was hovering dangerously near deadline, please note that there are no page numbers on the table of contents.

Despite the amount of ink used, it came off as completely contentless, especially the Stones/Scorcese and Oz/Dark Side pieces.

... "maybe this isn't crass ad scam after all" ... Indeed.

Mine came in a bag with New Yorker, which should have beat the shit out of its companion while in postal transit. William Shawn would never have allowed this to happen.

Loved the Van Heusen piece. Fits in great with the "stories of old Hollywood" portion of the VF formula. Likewise for Saturday Night Fever, since the 70s have more in common with "old Hollywood" than it seemed at the time...

Thanks for the line about forty-somethings claiming that music has sucked since Husker Du. As I head into my mid-forties, I've been wondering what line to use for my Crochety McOldfart routine. I mean, books have all sucked since Gravity's Rainbow/No good movies since Taxi Driver/No good art since late-period Guston... Perhaps true, but the timing is off, since all of those predate my generation. But yes, now I'm going to walk around mumbling about how kids today with their Clap your hands say yeah don't appreciate that all music sucks since Husker Du broke up.

I don't watch a lot of prime time television, but for odd reasons most of what I do watch is on CBS. I didn't know anything about that teevee special until I saw a commercial for it this very morning. It reeks of " 'special' programming to fill holiday-season time slot otherwise left empty due to writers' strike". And that reeks bad.

YF--please take back that reference to James Wolcott as a 'gifted' critic (although credit for going on to trash his article). Wolcott is right up there with Radiohead and Bruce Springsteen as a producer of crap no one pays any real attention to but everyone defers to nevertheless.
