for Brits who haven't spotted it yet, fact is a freebie mag which I've picked up in record shops and occasionally cafes. It's about the size of a 7" single. There were some freaky pictures of woebot in it once, I seem to remember.

fact's electronic-music coverage is always solid, in no small part because they've got the awesome kiran sande, of the awesome tape blog, writing for them. they manage to broaden their dance-music coverage beyond blog-house because unlike most dance bloggers, he actually goes out and, like, buys records, and has opinions of his own, rather than just sitting around and waiting for someone to send him a link to the latest crystal castles remix or whatever. ok, so i'm being snide, but it's kinda true.

It did deserve to be #16 on this list, which I agree is exponentially better than most others (except for the Kanye diss), because it's a catchy song.

But a Devil's spawn scorn on The Dream for writing 2 songs exactly like it. Fire and Brimstone!!

@katie_a_princess: I agree, this is a great list and gives a nod to Matthew Dear.

Jess, while most of the dance music I heard this year fell under the "yawn"ing of blog house, that oh so predictable melding of French big room disco and fuck all else, there were some amazing tunes to come out. Sick of Feist? Check out the Boyz Noise remix of "My Man My Moon." Ewan Pearson's remix of Courtney Tildwell "Don't Let The Stars Keep Us Tangled Up" was amazing, and I am in love with the Italians Do It Better label. They have perfectly captured the italo sound while being sleazy and not chessy.

@dennisobell: Agreed, agreed, and agreed.

I have no evidence to back this up, but it seems that "Umbrella" is the most "covered" song of the year as well -- the "Crazy" of 2007, as so many have noted -- and the breadth of stylistic arrangements fitted onto the song speaks volumes about its wide appeal, as well as its inherent quality as a song.

In the last week, I've come to believe that "Umbrella" may possibly be the only thing standing between Amy and history on February 10.

This keeps coming up, so I might as well throw this out there to innoculate myself before submitting my singles ballot:

"Umbrella" came closest in '07 to fusing a very current, radio-friendly but programmer-challenging style to classic songwriting chops.

The verse-to-chorus "When the sun shines, we shine together..." transition you could have played on a piano in 1967; but the refrain (I prefer to think of it as a Sinéad homage rather than O'Riordan) is this kind of neither-R&B-nor-pop chant that forces you to choose sides.

You can choose to hate it, as you (Jess) have. My wife and several of her girlfriends kind of can't stand it. I adore it.

This is why it's the best, or one of the best, songs of the year. I'm having a hard time thinking of a song that defined 2007 better, short of maybe "All My Friends," which is amazing but not really definitive; or "Rehab," which is definitive and wonderfully played but no longer amazing.

I hate that song, too. Not only was it way over-played, but the fact that it keeps popping up on every Top-Single list ever kind of makes me want to irrationally stab something.

But then, all of this rage could really be subconsciously directed at my former roommate who used to blast it while I was in the next room finishing my thesis.
