@JZ13: I think the Deerhunter album just misses the top 10. A couple months ago I thought it was probably top 5, but I wonder if burnout has started to kick in a little. The fact that the album was shut out of the singles list (though the EP placed a song) bodes ill, I think, though it could earn bonus points for "album-yness."

This list was great. A lot of my personal faves - "Black Like Me," "To the East," "Our Life Is Not a Movie...," "Peacebone," "Someone Great." The only odd absence seemed to be Blitzen Trapper's "Wild Mountain Nation."

I predict Deerhunter's Cryptograms makes P4k's surprise #1 album. And I hope the Electrelane album cracks the top 10, even if it does have to be helped along by the nostalgia factor.

Animal Collective/Panda Bear is the worst thing to hit indie music criticism this year. And the National didn't place because they're absurdly boring, sorry.

The albums list was fairly easy to predict last year (I nailed 6 out of the top 7, though my order was all wrong), but quite a bit tougher this year. The singles list reinforced my suspicion that LCD is a lock for #1, though it's possible the voters will view it more as a singles collection than a real "album" (not to mention I thought TVotR was a lock last year).

Prediction:
#1: LCD
#2: MIA
#3: Battles
#4: Animal Collective
#5: Radiohead

(Early IP07/P&J pred.: MIA, Arcade Fire, LCD, Radiohead, and Kanye in differing orders.)

i wish they still did "singles" rather than "tracks". and i wish they still limited it to 50. their "top singles" lists were always surprising, infuriating, enjoyable, interesting or some combination of all that. these last two years under the "tracks not singles" system has produced two nebulous shmears of "huh?" from artists who almost invariably had better songs on their records than the ones they chose.

I was so excited to see Róisín Murphy, Groove Armada's Mutya collab, and Sophie Ellis-Bextor in the lower reaches of the list. A little pandering to a pop fan like me goes a long way, apparently.

I'm confused - isn't the Pitchfork list simply every writer giving their Top 25 and then the lowest number is number 1, second lowest is number 2, and so forth? It seems strange to criticize Pitchfork as an institution when the editors of the site don't have that much to do with the results. For example, Radiohead's "All I Need" is number 20 but only because two writers voted for it (one of the writers gave it number 1, and another gave it number 15). Likewise, had ONE other writer put "Hey" by Home Blitz in their top 25 it would have made the list (because Matt LeMay had it as his number 1). Had Home Blitz made the list I'd be jumping for joy of course, but my joy would only be a result of two writers including it in their Top 25. Right? Had one other writer ranked the Black Kids in their Top 10 "INGTYBHTDWY" would have been at least in the Top 20, which I also would be thrilled about. I don't know exactly how it works, but it seems strange to me. On the other hand, I can't think of any better way to compile a year end list. I guess what I'm saying is it makes sense to hate the *system* Pitchfork uses if you want to, but don't hate on Pitchfork. For any of their lists, at least. Instead, hate the individual contributors.

The National should have owned the top ten. "Brainy" "Apartment Story" and "Mistaken For Strangers" are all classic. I don't want to bitch at length about the rest of the list, which seems to consist mostly of lame, thinly justified poptimist jive.
