		    <description><![CDATA[<P>"It's the weak whiny singer-songwriter crap that spurred on punk and an entire generation of men who would not take it."</P>
<P>I hope this is somewhat sarcastic; else, it's a highly simplistic interpretation. The rotting metropolis so harrowingly depicted in "Taxi Driver" had a hell of a lot more to do with punk, and the nerve it struck, than any Jackson Browne song. Furthermore, to hear NYC punks tell it, punk was more opposed to prog and corporate rock than the singer-songwriter movement, understandable since many CBGB stars (Patti Smith, David Byrne) had tendencies as self-indulgent and whiny as any singer-songwriter on the opposite coast.</P> <p><a href="http://">Charles A.
