I think we may have a winner on the established band front. One of the main criticisms I've seen of this method is that it isn't feasible for smaller bands (arguably evidenced by the Saul Williams release. depends on you ask, I guess).
I found an interesting article about a band (The Red Paintings) who are facing this issue while recording their debut album. Their completely different approach to label-free funding may be paving the road for lesser-known acts to pull this off in their own way. Basically, a fan donation funded album. The only thing that puzzles me is why this is an instrumental album. This seems like a test run more than anything else to see how it works and then who knows after that.
