Seriously. Most hip hop albums would make much better EPs. However, I'm sure the majors are going to keep using them as dumping grounds for remixes and crap and charge as much as possible. 5 (quality) songs for 5 bucks and I think you have a winner.

Captain Wrong

wait a second...i keep reading that albums are dead and that they're mostly filler anyway. if that's true, an ep must be an album with less filler and a lower cost (not that eps are a big bargain...)

speaking about rock and pop eps, for the most part...no labels are making much money off eps. they're generally done for the more serious fans and to keep artists in the public eye during that long span between albums. sometimes an ep will be released to set up an album. that's about it.

the writing is on the wall for rap albums (more than albums in other genres). they're not selling like they used to. many people have obviously moved on to singles and ringtones (and mixtapes). labels are are trying to follow the feedback and realities of the marketplace. it's difficult to predict an album's success, though, when its preceded by an ep that doesn't get the kind of promotional support an album would get. in that sense, some eps are destined to fail and labels shouldn't trust the feedback the marketplace gave it.

coolfer

i do agree with the general point in today's mixtape crazy world, but there are a few classics... well at least 100 Miles & Runnin + Creepin on a Come Up. also Kill At Will by ice cube is pretty good, and i have a soft spot for the beasties Rock Hard EP

dippinkind

Haha, I knew you'd cough up some examples of good rap EPs and defend the format. I think it made some sense in the eras that those artists emerged, but these days with the market flooded, I'm not sure being stingy is the answer. Not that every artist should go Wayne-crazy, but it's not 1992 anymore, you can't put 5 songs by a new artist on the shelf and pretend anyone who cares enough to hear those 5 songs is going to be satisfied with just that and nothing more. And hey, my outrage is at least a little feigned since I think most of the artists discussed in this post, well, suck.
I think I referred to The Leak as a digital-only release in one draft and then accidentally dropped that, my bad.

Al Shipley

I think that an EP is an ideal way to excise the superfluous shit that usually pads a major label rap release, but I definitely agree that it gives the labels carte blanche to overcharge for a modicum of new material.

StuntKockSteeev

I don't quite see the problem with the format. In fact I'm a fan. Many significant rap acts launched their careers off EPs: Eminem, Bone Thugs, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, The Roots, Mac Dre, UGK.

Was The Leak given a physical release? I was under the impression it was a web only thing.

noz
