I think that writer failed to realize that Col. Tom Parker wrote the "Shady Music Industy Practices Handbook". Mottola had NUTHIN' on Parker.

For the record (and I can't believe I'm bothering to fact-check this crackpot), the latter-day Elvis singles he cites ("A Little Less Conversation," etc.) topped the now-pathetic Billboard Singles Sales chart of physical releases, where you can be No. 1 by selling as little as 1,000 copies in a week. None of them is a Hot 100 No. 1, nor are they remotely comparable to one in terms of popularity.

I don't like Mariah creeping up on Elvis and the Beatles, either, but for all the Mottola-era chicanery, she was legitimately popular; virtually all of her sales and airplay happened in the SoundScan/Broadcast Data era, and while that can be goosed, it can't be faked.
