I'm not, but I have lots of family there, but please pardon me if I make some ignorant mistakes.

The counties mentioned are all adjacent to each other and fall on top of "tobacco road". Also, these counties hold most of the state's major universities, from Wake Forest in Winston-Salem to the "research triangle" and Duke/UNC/NCState. So I think there's the key to the answer -- these events are obviously aimed at students and other young people, who are a core constituency for Obama.
