No, you're not ignorant -- this is kinda new. The obsession with first-week numbers is at least as old as Soundscan; but the idea that a band shouldn't prime the pump by playing songs from a new album live in order to protect the first week is clearly a blogosphere-era attitude. I've never heard this one before.
