The interweb fosters and incubates local scenes. I'm finding more music/bands/songwriters now then ever before- and am constantly surprised. The local scene in Athens is now _my_ local scene. The local scene in Boston is now mine too.

Or to put it more simply, all your local scenez now belong to me.

The hard part still is discovering the nooks and crannies of the web where they are hiding in plain sight. A good place to start is Bradley's Almanac- and then go from there.

"90s mythologizing" of some perceived indie explosion conveniently ignores the 80s indie explosion, which ignores the 70s indie explosion, etc. I suppose market dynamics have changed over the decades, so the career arc said local bands take have changed as well, but there's pretty much always been, and always will be, a local/underground scene if you know where to look.
