@Empire: Sir Walter Raleigh is readily referenced almost 200 years later. Amy Winehouse will be nothing more than a tabloid flare up within 10 years... I'm guessing that's the disconnect there.

HuckNPluck

My apologies. I didn't read the post carefully enough and missed that you quoted the paragraph from The Times noting that "Losing Game" had won the Ivor Novello Award.

Rob Murphy

Kudos Kate. Not only for a good read, but also because it reminded me of an upper level lit seminar I took a few years ago, where I swore up and down about the similarity between Wilfred Owen's "Disabled" and "Ghetto Vet", by Ice Cube.

"I wouldn't consider a controversial pop singer a literary figure."

Sigh. How do you get to a lit final at freaking Cambridge without being brought to understand that most literary figures were (opinions of talent aside) essentially the Amy Winehouses of their day?

Empire

Well done, Kate. Well done.

I'm a little surprised at the head-scratching by the students and in the media. "Love Is A Losing Game" is a great song. The song won the prestigious Ivor Novello award for Best Song Musically And Lyrically on 22 May. (The Ivor Novello Awards are a British awards ceremony that honors songwriters and songs.) "Losing Game" won the award, besting, among other nominated songs, "You Know I'm No Good".

It's Amy's second win of that prestigious award (her "Stronger Than Me" won the award in 2004) and her third win at "The Ivors" overall ("Rehab" took the award for Best Contemporary Song in 2007).

Also, it's the second song I always want to hear from Back To Black, after "Back To Black".
