There is a lot of precedent for Slipknot doing traditional Death Metal. Listen back to their last two records. They ditched the whole nu-metal hybrid schtick, at least musically, after the first record.

I'm pretty psyched for the new one, but yeah, the last one has insane old school lead riffing.

I've heard the whole record (with the exception of an intro track that wasn't finished), and yeah, it's way more death metal than any previous Slipknot album. There are guitar solos on just about every song, and blast beats aplenty. There are also plenty of clean sung choruses, but the overall impression I got was that Mick and Joey Jordison (drummer) really took over this time out.
