Jay-Z’s New Album ‘Magna Carta Holy Grail’ Set For July 4 Release

Well, we knew Jay-Z and Samsung had a big announcement in store for tonight’s NBA Finals game. But rather than announce their rumored music streaming service, Jay used the massive platform to reveal the title and release date of his next album via a three-minute commercial. Magna Carta Holy Grail will drop July 4, and based on the making-of footage in the ad, PharrellRick Rubin and Timbaland are involved. But here’s where Samsung comes in: they’re giving away one million copies of the album to Samsung Galaxy users three days before the official release date.

This is the latest in a string of short-notice, big-name album releases this year, including Justin Timberlake‘s The 20/20 Experience and Kanye West‘s Yeezus. Speaking of, we feel Jay really missed a great opportunity to give this LP the Yeezus-esque title of Magna Carter, but oh well. This is Jay-Z’s first solo album since 2009’s The Blueprint 3, and fans can expect to hear the new Jay cuts live when he embarks on the Legends of the Summer tour with JT.

Check out the commercial that ran during Game 5 of the Finals below.
