Avicii Announces First Full-Length Album & Folk-Tinged Single “Wake Me Up”

While he’s been on the electronic dance scene since 2010, Swedish DJ-turned-producer Avicii will release his first full-length album, #TRUE, this September. Recently signed to Island Records, Avicii will collaborate with a variety of artists from across the musical spectrum, including Michael Einsinger from Incubus, country music legend Mac Davis, and Daft Punk‘s “Get Lucky” guest star Nile Rodgers.

With mainstream radio just beginning to shift away from EDM-centric hits, the “Le7els” hitmaker takes a sharp left turn sonically, toying with folk influences on the album’s lead single “Wake Me Up.” The track features American soul singer Aloe Blacc, whose 2010 single “I Need A Dollar” charted in numerous European countries and appeared on various commercials and television shows — and while Blacc’s gritty, soulful vocals aren’t exactly what comes to mind when thinking of a vocalist for an EDM club-banger, the result is still worth a listen.

“Wake Me Up” sounds like a Mumford & Sons single on molly (not Miley, but molly): It’s cheesy and it’s emotional, but it’s also a high-energy anthem and has the makings of a worldwide smash.

Listen to the track below and grab #TRUE when it hits retailers on September 17.
