Even with J. Cole‘s sophomore album Born Sinner doing well on the charts, the rapper has not forgotten his roots. Cole is planning to re-release The Warm Up (2009) and Friday Night Lights (2010) for purchase — the two classic mixtapes that drove him to stardom. He gave the surprise announcement on Houston’s 97.9 The Box, where he stated the re-release is all for his fans — not the money. “I don’t care if they sell a thousand copies. It’s just to get them the proper due that they deserve,” Cole said.

“The classics that I had, I didn’t get a chance to like, have those be commercially sold. That was the only part that was missing. So that’s my goal. Now that this album is doing well, my next plan is to release those commercially.”

These two mixtapes set the foundation for J. Cole’s career, solidfying him as a force in rap. They are even the reason Jay-Z noticed him in the first place: after hearing “Lights Please” off Friday Night Lights, Hova signed him to Roc Nation. No word yet on when the mixtapes will be in stores, but it’s definitely something to look forward to for hip-hop completists and Cole supporters.
