*NSYNC To Reunite At The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards?

We have to admit, we were a little perplexed when MTV announced that Justin Timberlake would receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the VMAs on Sunday (August 25). But now the New York Post is reporting that in addition to JT’s gig at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, *NSYNC will reunite to perform as well. And now it all makes a bit more sense. Not that *NSYNC had enough quality videos to boost JT into MJ/Madonna/Britney video territory, but this sort of big spectacle would at least make the award seem momentous.

Of course, we have to mention that the Post HAS BEEN WRONG BEFORE. For this story, the paper cites “sources,” but the fact that JC Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick, Joey Fatone and Lance Bass were spotted in the VIP section at JT’s Miami concert on Friday (with Jessica Biel and Timberlake’s mother) lends some credence to the claims.

The timing is certainly right for an *NSYNC reunion. There’s been a spate of boy band reunions recently (Backstreet Boys, New Kids On The Block) plus the quick Destiny’s Child reunion, and the ’90s nostalgia kick is in full swing (Jesus am I so old that I’ve seen the ’80s obsession come and go?). Plus, earlier this year, the group’s debut album turned 15.

If the reports are true, the interesting question is, WHY is Justin doing this? Don’t get me wrong, this would be a very exciting thing, and we’re all for it. It’s just that he has successfully separated himself from his goofy boy band history — the rarest of music industry achievements! What does he gain from reverting back to those choreographed group dance moves and reawakening memories of ramen noodle hair after all this time constructing his “impossibly cool guy who’s impossible to hate” image?

I guess that means he must actually, like, be friends with the four members and enjoy performing with them or something! What a guy.
