Katy Perry Explains Her New Album Title ‘Prism’: “I Finally Let The Light In”

Katy Perry teased her new album Prism with trailers that set fire, if not wished death upon her Teenage Dream era. In comparison though, and despite how she felt going into this particular record, Prism itself will not be as dark.

Perry set out to make this clear when she recently explained the title of her new album, out October 22, to MTV. “The reason why I called this record Prism is because I actually finally let the light in and then I was able to create all these songs that were inspired by letting the light in and doing some self-reflection and just kind of working on myself,” she said.

In the process, Perry also retracted what she previously said to L’uomo Vogue, of Prism being “a much darker album” because of her separation from actor-comedian Russell Brand. This time to MTV, she echoed her sentiments of Prism when she talked about its lead single “Roar.” “It’s a song about standing up for yourself, who can be the biggest bully in the equation … and can get in your way,” she said.

Suddenly, Perry’s Rocky-themed promo for “Roar” and its connections to Prism start to make sense. Watch her chat with MTV up top.
