Drake Responds To Kendrick Lamar’s “Control” Verse: He’s “Not Murdering Me, At All”

In his Billboard cover story, Drake talks about crafting hip-hop anthems with accidentally viral phrases like “YOLO” or “No new friends” and the new happiness he has found in his success. But the thing everyone will be talking about is his response to Kendrick Lamar‘s finger-pointing “Control” verse. And like it was no big thang, Drizzy says when he first heard it, “I went about my day, went and got dinner and kept it moving.”

“I didn’t really have anything to say about it,” he said. “It just sounded like an ambitious thought to me. That’s all it was. I know good and well that Kendrick’s not murdering me, at all, in any platform. So when that day presents itself, I guess we can revisit the topic.”

This tough stance is in line with the more “hardball” tone he’s apparently taking on Nothing Was The Same. (Although it’s quite different from the softy stuff displayed on “Hold On We’re Going Home”).

Drake is the latest person, in the hip-hop world and out of it, to respond to K-Dot’s “Control” challenge, but his reaction carries a particular weight since he was mentioned in the song. A$AP Rocky, who was also called out in the song, had a similarly incredulous reaction, saying Lamar must be “smoking crack” to call himself King of New York.
