New Velvet Underground Tribute Album Features Covers By Michael Stipe, Courtney Barnett, Iggy Pop, St. Vincent, And Other Indie Royalty
The final album produced by Hal Wilner before his death in 2020, I'll Be Your Mirror: A Tribute to the Velvet Underground & Nico promises performances from a galaxy of indie elite performers including Michael Stipe, Iggy Pop, St. Vincent, Thurston Moore, King Princess, Matt Berninger (from the National), Kurt Vile & The Violators, Courtney Barnett, Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen, and Andrew Bird among others.
The tracklist pays tribute to the eponymous landmark album from 1967, The Velvet Underground & Nico. Contributor Kurt Vile performs a cover of "Run Run Run," which he recorded on the road with a mobile studio. Regarding the song, he spoke with Rolling Stone:
“Lou Reed/the Velvet Underground were probably my earliest classic rock influence. I loved it . . . . When you hear music like that, so organic and raw, but you know, so confident, all those things combined, [it's] so cool. So unapologetic. It just has an effect on you that you can’t even necessarily detect at the moment.”
