Cat Keeps Staring At The Wall, Then Its Owner Discovered A Hidden Room (See Inside)
Sometimes your pets can develop unusual behavior that you just can't figure out.
A woman took to Reddit to try to get some help answering why her cat was staring at a wall. The answer led to quite the discovery!
Tucker The Cat
The woman had a pet male cat named Tucker.
Tucker was 14 years old and she had owned him for 10 years. She said that Tucker was very easy-going and healthy with no behavioral issues.
Became Obsessed With The Dining Room Wall
At one point, the woman said that Tucker had become obsessed with a section of a wall in the dining room.
This was a little strange to her as there was nothing special about the specific area that Tucker would stare at.
Began Batting At The Wall
Tucker would get very excited at first while he was looking at the wall.
He would bat at the section of the wall and rub up against it. At first, his owner didn't think anything of it.
Doesn't Want To Hang Out
A few days passed and Tucker was spending all of his time in the dining room.
As he was spending so much time in the dining room, he didn't want to hang out with his owner at all.
Never Left The Dining Room
It got to the point where he would not even leave the dining room to eat or use the litter box.
He wasn't animated either, he would just sit and stare at the same section of the wall for hours on end.
Moved Her Work Station To The Dining Room
His owner was quite concerned and confused as to why this was happening.
She decided that she would work from the dining room one day to see if she could figure out what was so interesting about the wall.
Was There Something In The Wall?
She had two theories as to what might be causing the fixation.
The first was Tucker picking up the scent or sounds of something that might be living behind the wall.
Was It The Light?
The second was perhaps there were some lights that were being cast onto the wall.
Were cars driving by on the street shining lights through the window and Tucker had become very interested in them?
Moved Everything To The Dining Room
After spending nearly 10 hours in the dining room, Tucker's owner didn't think either of her theories was the cause of the fixation.
She moved Tucker's food and litter box into the dining room as he wasn't eating or going to litter box.
Took Him To The Vet
When all else failed, she decided that it would be a good idea to take Tucker to the vet.
Though she thought that Tucker was healthy, she wanted to make sure that there was nothing going on that she wasn't aware of.
All Clear From The Vet
She talked to the vet about what was going on and had him examined.
The vet said that Tucker was in good health and did not have any idea why he might be acting like that.
Blocked Off Access
She then decided that she would block off Tucker's access to the dining room.
This didn't really solve anything as Tucker would just sit curled up in a ball next to the blockage.
She Was Worried
She became very worried for Tucker as this had been going on for some time.
He was not eating or using the litter box and she hadn't seen him sleep since this all started. Tucker also had become pretty much unresponsive to her.
She Couldn't Hear Anything
Reddit users suggested that she should listen to see if she could hear anything behind the wall.
She put her ear up to the wall but didn't seem to hear anything out of the ordinary. Pest control couldn't come for a number of days for a more in-depth look.
She Cut A Hole To Investigate
The woman decided that she would take matters into her own hands and, after receiving the suggestions from Reddit users, she cut a hole in the wall.
She cut a three-foot by three-foot square in the drywall. There was no sign that anything was living in the wall.
Discovered A Coal Chute
But then Tucker's owner found an extremely old cast iron doorway.
The house was in a very old neighborhood and she did some research and discovered that it was a coal chute. People used to shovel coal down into the basement using the chutes.
The Basement Was Locked Off
The woman was a little taken aback because there was no basement under the dining room.
She realized that meant the chute went into the house's original basement that she did not have access to.
Glad Tucker Is Okay
When it came down to it, she was happy that Tucker was okay and that nothing was wrong with him.
She now just needed to figure out what she was going to do about the coal chute.
